Construction of systems for prevention and early warning of floods

The aim of the project was to achieve a positive impact, sustainable change and lasting improvement within the eligible cross-border area, regarding the prevention and assessment of flood risk, management and mitigation of the consequences of floods in the municipalities of Valandovo and Kresna. The project has implemented integrated monitoring and assessment for flood prevention in the cross-border region, through the introduction of special equipment for water monitoring, to improve emergency preparedness and intervention in case of floods in both municipalities. The implementation of the project has contributed to the development of a unified cross-border concept for risk assessment of hydro-meteorological phenomena and for the development of a joint risk assessment and capacity building.

The main results of the project are:
           - identification of risk zones in the rivers flowing in the municipalities of Kresna and Valandovo, including photography, assessment and analysis of the current state of the rivers in the two municipalities, mapping of potential flood risk areas in the transboundary target area, study of water basins in the area considered decisive for potential floods;
            - delivery and installation of 5 sets of specific monitoring equipment of the rivers of the Municipality of Kresna, necessary for obtaining real-time information on the water level in the rivers considered decisive for the floods - Struma, Breznishka, Vlahinska, Moravska;
             - delivery of 3 pcs. specific water monitoring equipment in Valandovo Municipality, to receive real-time information on the water level in the Anska River, causing the floods in Valandovo Municipality;
             - the supply and launch of a joint integrated system for monitoring for early warning of floods in the municipality of Valandovo. The system collects, processes and provides real-time information from already installed monitoring equipment. The installation of such a system provides reliable information on potential hazards and allows the relevant institutions to make informed decisions. This system is used by both municipalities via an internet connection;
             - capacity building by providing training for the former responders in risk management: paramedics, ambulance nurses, firefighters, civil protection officers, special staff responsible for disaster management in the local authorities of the municipalities of Kresna and Valandovo.
