Protecting the population in the municipalities of Karbinci and Strumiani and prevention of flood damage

The project has proposed a comprehensive solution to the problems with high waters in the municipalities of Karbintsi and Strumyani. The main results of the project are: increased safety of the local population in the two municipalities from natural disasters and prevented floods and floods of the main settlements of the two municipalities. The project includes corrections of the riverbeds of the Kozyachka River in Karbintsi and the Shashka River in Strumyani, which were violated and posed a potential threat to the adjacent territories and infrastructure and a threat to the health of the citizens in both municipalities. The project is developed on the basis of preliminary studies and analyzes of the condition of the two rivers and ensures the safety for the health and property of the population of the partner municipalities from the cross-border region.

The project has implemented construction activities for flood disaster prevention in the urban areas of the municipalities of Strumyani and Karbintsi, as follows:
- Cleaning, correction and construction of protective walls on the bed of the river Kozyachka in Karbintsi, 256 meters from the most critical part;
- Cleaning and strengthening of the river Shashka in Strumyani between threshold 4 and profile 28 with a length of 341 meters - new retaining walls of reinforced concrete to strengthen the left bank - 260 meters and the right bank - 302 meters; cleaning, leveling and lining with stone on the bottom - 340 m;

Another major result of the project is the increased capacity of 30 representatives of the municipal administrations and experts from other responsible institutions, regarding disaster situations on the territory of the municipalities of Karbintsi and Strumyani (RIEW, Basin Directorate, Strumyani Municipality, Karbintsi Municipality, NGOs, District Administration, etc.), including groups of young people, Roma and people with disabilities. The representatives of the target group got acquainted with the application of new technologies in the field of disaster management, with the possibilities for partnership in disaster prevention, as well as with the role of the population in the disaster prevention program.
